56 seconds that could save your family months of confusion

A short introduction to what estate planning actually covers — and why it’s worth having in writing now.

Honest questions

Questions worth answering now — not later

Who could handle financial decisions if you couldn't?

If an illness or accident left you unable to manage your money, someone may need legal authority to pay bills and handle accounts. Without a document naming that person, your family may face delays.

How would loved ones know your healthcare wishes?

Putting your wishes in writing and naming someone to speak for you can spare your family from guessing during a difficult moment.

Have you documented your inheritance intentions?

Writing down who should receive what can help reduce confusion and make your intentions clear to the people you leave behind.

Have you considered care and financial arrangements for minor children?

You can record who you would want to care for your children and how assets set aside for them should be managed. A guardian recommendation is subject to applicable law and court decisions.

The core documents

What each document does, in plain language

Revocable Living Trust

A document that can hold your assets during your life and describe how they pass on. You can usually change it while you're alive. It generally only controls assets that are actually moved ("funded") into the trust.

Will

Says who should receive property not otherwise handled, and lets you name an executor and recommend a guardian for minor children. Guardian choices are subject to applicable law and court decisions.

Financial Power of Attorney

Names someone you trust to handle financial and legal matters for you if you're unable to.

Healthcare Power of Attorney

Names someone to make medical decisions for you if you can't, and can help communicate your healthcare wishes.
